History

The area has a long history. There are archaeological remains date from neolithic and Bronze/Iron Age times, and a Roman road came through Windmill. Great and Little Hucklow (Hochelai) along with Grindlow were named in the Domesday Survey of 1088. The area has a long history of lead mining, dating from at least the 13th century. Great Hucklow was well-known during the mid-years of the twentieth century for its Playhouse, where L Du Garde Peach's "Derbyshire Plays" were performed by local people. Recent history has seen an influx of professional and retired people, and some residents supplement their incomes through providing accommodation for tourists.
