Turnpike

The Sheffield to Buxton turnpike road of 1758, planned by the surveyor Wm. Fairbank, passed through Great Hucklow Parish. The road was originally planned to go across Sir William Hill and  through Windmill before Tideswell complained they needed the business.

The road was eventually built going via Grindleford to Eyam, Foolow and  Benstor House on the main B6049.   At Benstor House the turnpike is believed to have crossed an ancient trackway known as the Portway coming from Alport Hill to Mam Tor.
