Medieval Hucklow

Great and Little Hucklow (Hochelai) along with Grindlow were named in the Domesday survey of 1088.

Great Hucklow parish was originally part of the great parish of Hope, which was one of the largest parishes in England.   It was given by Henry II to his son John, who gave the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield the ecclesiastical rights around 1192 in return for his loyalty.   Hucklow Parish bordered on the Forest of the Peak, a royal hunting forest.
