How the Great Hucklow Well Dressing started

There is an interesting history behind the first Well Dressing in 1987.  In that year, Laporte Minerals came to Great Hucklow and set up a drift mine, i.e. an underground tunnel.  Some villages opposed the mine, despite the work it provided for local people.  There was ill feeling and the village was split.  This led to the young people of the village forming Community Spirit to bring people back together, which it did.

A date was set around 20th August for Wakes Week celebrations, including activities such as the Well Dressing, Pram Race and It's a Knockout.  Community Spirit still runs Wakes Week today.
